Doncaster Council is reassuring residents that plans are in place in the event of flooding over the Christmas period.

The Met Office is forecasting heavy rain on Friday, throughout the weekend and on Christmas Eve. Flood alerts are in place for:

  • River Don Lower Catchment from Hexthorpe to Stainforth, including Swaith Dike and North Swaith Dike in Bentley.
  • River Went Catchment - River Went and Hoyle Mill Stream from Ackworth Moor Top to the River Don.

Doncaster Council has been preparing for bad weather all year.

Before the heavy rains hit the borough last month over 150 members of staff had already taken part in a series of emergency planning exercises.

‘Exercise Firefly’ guided staff through a challenging scenario involving bad weather, important events and numerous accidents all taking place during one day in Doncaster.

Participants went through the steps they would take to deal with problems as if it was a real life situation.

A further training event was also held for 120 staff to ensure that they were winter ready with hands on training on flood response and winter gritting.
