A police officer has died in a road accident while answering an emergency call near Ripon, North Yorkshire Police said today.
The officer was killed when his patrol vehicle collided with a tree in the village of West Tanfield, near Ripon, at 7pm, on Saturday.
He was the only person in the vehicle when it crashed and was pronounced dead at the scene. North Yorkshire Police said a full investigation will be carried out to determine the exact circumstances which led to the collision.
The road was closed for several hours on Saturday night to allow collision investigators to examine the scene, the Health and Safety Executive have also been informed. The officer's name has not yet been released.
