Clegg: Don’t give up on Don Valley Stadium

Nick Clegg has said it would be 'wrong' for Sheffield City Council to close Don Valley Stadium.

The deputy prime minister is urging the Labour-run council to re-think the proposal to close the venue which has been a training base of sports stars like Olympic champion, Jessica Ennis.

Currently, the council subsidises the Stadium as it doesn’t make enough revenue.

The Stadium was part of the World Student Games facilities, built by the Labour council in the 1990s. Local taxpayers are still paying more than £20m a year as part of the World Student Games facilities debt.

Questions should be asked on why Sheffield finds itself in this situation? Whereas similar sporting facilities in other cities are not under threat, the Don Valley Stadium could close despite the fact it is a world class facility. We have to listen to the local sporting community who have said not enough has been done to promote the use of this iconic Sheffield stadium.

It would be wrong for Sheffield’s Labour councillors to tear down Don Valley Stadium without giving a second thought to preserving Sheffield’s reputation as a great City of Sport.
