Mother of first Brit killed fighting Islamic State welcomes Syria airstrikes

The mother of Konstandinos Erik Scurfield, the first UK volunteer to die fighting ISIS in Syria with the Kurdish forces of the YPG, has told Calendar she is cautiously hopeful after MPs voted to begin airstrikes in the country.

Vasiliki Scurfield

Vasiliki Scurfield from Royston, near Barnsley, has become a vocal supporter of the Kurdish minority in Syria since her son was killed fighting ISIS militants nine months ago.

Kosta Scurfield

The former Marine, known to his family as Kosta, was said to have been motivated to join Kurdish forces after being horrified by the atrocities committed by ISIS.

His mother says the UK has a responsibility to intervene.
