The 33-year-old cyclist is believed to have been struck by a silver Volkswagen Golf near to the Cardigan Fields retail park at 11:26pm last night.

Police say the Golf overturned and came to rest in a parade of shops causing significant damage to two premises on Kirkstall Road.

The driver of the Golf, a 22-year-old man, was seriously injured and was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he is currently in a stable condition in intensive care.

A Volkswagen Passat is also believed to have been involved in the incident and the occupants of that vehicle, two men aged 23 and 36, from Leeds, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and are currently in custody.

Police say there is significant disruption to traffic in the area and diversions are in place.

"A scene is currently in place in Kirkstall Road and will be undergoing detailed forensic examination throughout the day. Work is also ongoing to make safe the shop premises that were damaged. We expect the scene to remain in place for some considerable time."
