Building work has started on a new £57million Leeds City College campus that councillors believe is the "missing piece of the jigsaw" for the city's so-called cultural quarter.

Councillors and college bosses were on site earlier to mark the milestone after contractors cleared land next to the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Quarry Hill.

The new hub for digital and creative arts and health and social sciences will take two years to build and is expected to open for the 2019/2020 academic year.

The development has been part-funded by a £33.4m grant from the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership.

This was probably the missing piece in the jigsaw in terms of what will go on here in terms of digital and creative arts, and health and social sciences.

As a city we've got one of the largest offers in terms of health care and the qualifications the young people will gain will only go towards helping that.

For our students it's a fantastic development, for our college it's a great development, for the city on this site in particular, I'm hopeful that this will kickstart the development of the whole Quarry Hill site and make it into a real cultural hotbed for Leeds.
