Battery hens SOS brings out Dunkirk spirit

Heading for happy retirement

More than 500 ex-commercial or battery chickens have been saved from the chop this weekend in a Dunkirk style operation.

The British Hen Welfare Trust appealed for residents in Newark, Lincolnshire, or just about anywhere else, to help rehouse one of the homeless hens from industrial scale farms in the area.

All that was needed to let an old lady live out the rest of her days in peace was a small back garden. And the response was overwhelming, as Yasmine Bodalbhai reports
