Rail passengers across the region are facing a second day of disruption this week due to a strike over the role of train guards.

Northern Rail says it will run close to half of it's normal timetable, but services will only operate from 7am to 7pm.

Members of the RMT union are staging a 24-hour walkout over Northern Rail's refusal to rule out running some services without train guards.

The union says the strikes are about "putting the safety and security of the travelling public before the profits of private companies". They blame Government policy for forcing companies to make changes to the on-board conductor role.

"We have to make changes to the on-board conductor role and in the future we want to make staff more visible and available. We are firmly focused on delivering a better service for our customers and have urged the RMT to back our investment and modernisation plans, not take more unnecessary strike action. We are committed to resolving their dispute."
