Across the Calendar region, more than 20 hospices with thousands of staff and volunteers are supporting people coming to the end of their lives.
But much of the work that they do is carried out in the homes of patients rather than in the hospices themselves.
As part of Hospice Care Week, Calendar visited Saint Catherine's Hospice in Scaborough.
The NHS pays Saint Catherine's £2m a year for its services, but the hospice has to raise another £4m to support its work.
