Police are appealing for information. Credit: PA

Police are appealing for the owner of a dog to come forward after a four-year-old girl was bitten on the face in Scunthorpe.

The incident involved a black and white Staffordshire bull terrier and happened at a house in Warley Road on New Year's Eve while the owner was not present.

Paramedics treated the girl for puncture wounds to her face, which required hospital treatment but are not life-threatening.

The dog had been removed from the house before emergency service workers arrived and police are now trying to track both the dog and owner down.

We need to speak to you and it's better that you contact us so that we can investigate the incident fully.

We know it is very difficult for you but avoiding speaking to us may make matters worse for you.

– Chief Inspector Sharon Harrison, Humberside Police
