Works begins on new Scunthorpe indoor market

Work has started on the new £4m St John's Market in Scunthorpe.

Interserve Construction will refurbish all three floors of the former BHS store in Scunthorpe town centre for the new indoor market which is expected to create construction jobs and training opportunities.

St John’s Market forms part of plans to transform the Scunthorpe town centre with a business led £60m regeneration project.

The council is already in the process of allocating stalls and an announcement is expected soon on who those stallholders will be.

Traders will continue to operate from the current site until the new indoor market opens in Spring 2019.

Refurbishment work will include providing ground floor food retail space, cold stores and refrigerated counters, seating areas, storage areas, supply and erection of stalls, and a new food outlet area on the first floor plus improvements to the market retail experience.

The contract includes provision wherever possible for the engagement of local workers and suppliers including Scunthorpe Steel.

“This latest move signifies the swift progress being made to create the new indoor market that will help safeguard and create up to 90 construction jobs, and provide apprenticeship and training and work experience opportunities.”

– Cllr Rob Waltham, Leader, North Lincolnshire Council
