Police are currently dealing with an unexploded device which was uncovered by workmen in the Water Lane area of Selby this morning.
A suspicious device which led to part of Selby town centre being cordoned off as bomb disposal experts were called in turned out to be an old car part. Builders found the heavy cast iron device and, worried that it may be an unexploded bomb or grenade, called in police.

Hill found the heavy cast iron device and, worried that it may be an unexploded bomb grenade, called in police. The Army bomb disposal unit was sent from Catterick Garrison while streets were sealed off and shops evacuated. When they arrived it
was quickly established that the part posed no danger and had in fact belonged to an old make of Citroen.
Bomb disposal experts have confirmed that the suspected device dug up by workmen in Selby is not an explosive device. The cordons and road closures have now been lifted and members of the public can return to the area.
The post office, library and shops between the Three Swans Pub and the post office in Selby have been evacuated following the discovery of an unexploded device. The Army’s bomb disposal unit is currently en-route to the incident.
The roads around the 100 metre cordon remain closed.
Army bomb disposal experts have been called to deal with an unexploded device uncovered by workmen at the back of the Three Swans public house in the Water Hill Lane area of Selby.
The device was reported to North Yorkshire Police who have set up a 100 metre cordon around the area as a precaution. The roads have been closed around the cordon.
