The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who was struck by a police vehicle in a park.
West Yorkshire Police told the IPCC that Donald Bennett, 83, died after one of its vehicles collided with a man in Pudsey Park near Leeds. Early enquiries suggest an officer was responding to reports of a disturbance at the park and the van was left unattended before it struck Mr Bennett.
The force later referred the incident, which happened on Saturday, 1 June at about 2.15pm, to the IPCC and an IPCC investigator was sent to the scene.
IPCC staff met with members of Mr Bennett’s family at his home in Pudsey to explain the investigation.
Cindy Butts, the IPCC’s Commissioner for West Yorkshire, said: "This is a tragic incident in which an elderly man lost his life. I will ensure our investigation is robust and that it provides the answers Mr Bennett’s family and friends will understandably want.”
The IPCC, which is independent of the police, would like to speak to anyone with information about the collision. To contact the IPCC investigation team telephone 0800 096 9078 or email Pudseypark@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk.
