It is estimated that about 10% of first appointments in hospitals are missed - slightly higher for follow-up appointments. At Doctor Richard Vautrey's surgery in the Meanwood area of Leeds, around 6% of appointments are missed - slightly higher for nurse appointments, and lower for those with GPs.
The Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman has called for patients to pay a deposit when making an appointment with their GP. If they don't turn up, they will lose their money. Mr Sheerman says this would help reduce the number of missed appointments.
