Flood prevention measures are to be fitted to 48 properties in Bolton on Dearne after a £274,000 grant from the Environment Agency. Barnsley Council was successful in its bid for the funding which will be used on houses that were inundated by the high floodwaters of June 2007.
The project will begin in the new year and will involve fitting air-brick covers, removable door barriers and one-way valves for waste pipes.
Barnsley Council plans to axe over 300 jobs - in its latest round of budget cuts. Unions fear some of the redundancies could be compulsory as the authority seeks to save 16 and a half million pounds over the next year. It has started a 90 day consultation period with the unions.
