Hundreds of walkers are expected to take part in this year's Boxing Day Pilgrimage from Ripon Cathedral to Fountains Abbey, a tradition begun in 1982 , following in the footsteps of a group of Cistercian Monks who first walked from Ripon to Fountains on December 26th, 1132, and founded the Abbey.
The Bishop of Ripon and Leeds, Rt Revd John Packer has led the walk for the past thirteen years as the popularity of the four mile pilgrimage has continued to grow. Last year, record numbers - more than 14 hundred - took part in the walk.
Before the pilgrims set off, a service of Holy Communion takes place at 9.30am at the Cathedral which this year will be led jointly by the Dean of Ripon, the Very Revd Keith Jukes and Bishop Packer.
The Boxing Day Pilgrimage sets out at 10.15am on December 26th from Ripon Cathedral.
