Conservative Party attacks Labour's education record

As Ed Miliband prepares to give a conference speech in which he will pledge that a Labour Government would carry out biggest shake-up of vocational education for a generation, the Conservative Party has attacked his party's education record.

Under Labour, we saw our country’s education system plummet down the global league tables, far fewer apprenticeships created than our competitors, and youth unemployment rising even before the boom turned to bust.

This Government is taking radical steps to create more good schools, reform vocational qualifications and create far more apprenticeships than Labour ever did. But Labour have opposed our reforms that will give our children the skills to compete in a world that has changed.

Ed Miliband used talks with French president Francois Hollande to lobby for the Tour de France cycle race to come to Yorkshire. And the Doncaster North MP said that the president "seemed supportive of the idea" when he raised it during talks in Paris.

Mr Miliband's visit came just days after British cyclist Bradley Wiggins completed his epic victory in the sport's most prominent contest, sparking a massive boost in interest in cycling in the UK. Yorkshire is bidding to host the first two stages - known as Le Grand Depart - of the Tour in 2016.

The Yorkshire stages would run through cities and beauty spots including Leeds, York, Hull, Sheffield, Scarborough and the Yorkshire Dales. "I mentioned Bradley Wiggins' triumph and told the president about the bid being put forward by Yorkshire to host the initial two stages, " said Mr Miliband.

"He said the Tour de France had gone through his constituency and I said I was looking forward to it hopefully going through mine. He seemed supportive of the idea. I know it is not a decision for him, but it would be a great thing for it to come to Yorkshire."

Elections 2012: More on Miliband egged

Labour leader Ed Miliband was hit with an egg during a walkabout in Southampton today. The politician was giving a TV interview when a man in a hat came through the throng and slapped the egg on to his shoulder.

The egg broke on to Mr Miliband's jacket, which he quickly removed and gave to an aide as the man ran off down the street. He finished the interview in just a shirt and tie, made an exit and went back to his car.
