Yorkshire roots of Royal baby to be
Prince William and Kate have announced a Royal baby is on its way. But did you know he or she will be the latest addition to a long-established and illustrious family from Leeds. And here are the facts to prove it:
- Kate's father, Michael, was born in Leeds in 1949
- He is a descendant of the famous Luptons - a most civic-minded family
- An Alderman of Leeds city council, Francis Lupton was Kate's great, great grandfather.
- His brothers, Charles and Hugh were Lord Mayors.
- His younger brother Arthur was an advocate of education, the pro-chancellor of Leeds University.
- The family fortune was built mainly on the textile industry - 7 cloth mills alone once stood in Whitehall Road
- In 1914, Francis's daughter Olive Lupton married Noel Middleton .
- On 7 December 1946, at St John the Baptist Church in the Leeds suburb of Adel, their son Peter married Valerie Glasborow - they are Kate Middleton's grandparents.
The Lupton's owned a number of properties - including the imposing Beechwood in Elmete Lane and Rocklands in St Mary's Road in Chapeltown, now owned by the NHS. The family used its wealth to expand and improve the city, inlcuding the Leeds General Infirmary.
Perhaps the family' greatest achievment was when Francis, Kate's great great grandfather ordered the clearing of the squalid and overcrowded slums of Quarry Hill. Between the Luptons and the Middletons, Kate's links to the county stretch back for generations. For more on this story click here
