Nursery statement over toddler's death

York College have issued a statement over the death of toddler, Lydia Bishop:

We deeply regret what happened and can't begin to imagine the pain experienced by Lydia's family and everyone affected by this terrible tragedy

The governing body and all at York College respect fully the legal judgements made in this case and remain committed to learning from this tragedy

The college took the decision to close the nursery immediately after the tragedy, and say it will not reopen.

A jury has cleared a nursery school teacher of the death of a toddler in her care.

Jury retires in toddler nursery death

A jury has retired to consider its verdict in the trial of a nursery worker accused of manslaughter following the death of a toddler on a playground slide.

Three-year-old Lydia Bishop choked to death on her first full day at the York College nursery when she became tangled in a rope on an outdoor slide.

Nursery worker Sophee Redhead, 25, is accused of manslaughter by gross negligence and an alternative health and safety charge. She denies both charges.York College denies one health and safety charge.

The prosecution at Leeds Crown Court has told the jury that Lydia was left unsupervised and "to her own devices" for up to 20 minutes when the tragedy happened in September 2012.It is also alleged there were "fundamental flaws" in the health and safety procedures at the college nursery.

Sophee Redhead has denied she did not look after Lydia properly.The college's defence counsel has said Lydia's death was an accident that could not have been foreseen.

2 arrested over nursery death

Two members of staff at York College nursery have been arrested as part of the investigation into the death of child there.

3-year-old Lydia Bishop died when she became entangled in a piece of equipment in the playground. An inquest earlier this week heard she was found unresponsive on a slide.

The staff, 2 women, have been questioned and released on bail until the end of October.

Staff interviewed over nursery death

Two members of staff at York College nursery have been interviewed following the death of a toddler.

Three-year-old Lydia Bishop had been in the playground when it's understood she became entangled in play equipment. She later died in hospital.

North Yorkshire Police say the staff members were interviewed by detectives as part of the ongoing enquiries into the circumstances surrounding Lydia's death.

The 3 year old girl who did after becoming entangled in play equipment at York College nursery has been named by police as Lydia Bishop. The youngster died in hospital following the accident in the playground yesterday afternoon.
