Charitable causes across Yorkshire have been awarded millions of pounds thanks to the Big Lottery Fund. Around £3.7 million in funding has been awarded to 15 projects across the region as part of the Big Lottery Fund's Reaching Communities programme.
Among the organisations to benefit is the Barnsley Beacon, which supports the relatives and friends of substance users. The charity has received £112,389, which will enable it to continue to expand its projects supporting carers, providing a 24/7 helpline, counselling, and complementary treatments.
– June Marshall, founder of Barnsley Beacon
There is plenty of help for the addict, but very little for the innocent victims of drug and alcohol abuse, the family, friend or carer. This is why I founded Barnsley Beacon. This has become a safe haven for myself, and other people affected by the trauma of drug and alcohol abuse."
