A lorry driver has appeared in court over the death of a police officer in West Yorkshire.
PC Mark Goodlad died as he helped a stranded motorist on the hard shoulder of the M1 at Crigglestone in October 2011.
Andrew Abernethy is charged with causing death by dangerous driving. During the short, 4 minute hearing at Wakefield Magistrates' Court no plea was entered and he was remanded on bail to appear at Leeds Crown Court on June 20.
PC Goodlad's widow, Helen, was seen visibly trembling throughout the hearing. The prosecution said this is a "grave and weighty matter".
PC Goodlad was an officer with West Yorkshire Police for ten years.
