A 24 hour strike called by the GMB and UNITE unions has seen more than half of Remploy workers take part in the industrial action today.
The company has 54 factories, including Sheffield and Chesterfield, where workers padlocked the gates.
In Sheffield, where the GMB’s national officer was present, employees climbed over the fence to get into work. There, employees going in to work were photographed and told that their pictures would be posted on the internet.
The Government decided to reduce funding for specialised Remploy factories which provide work for disabled people, but has announced it is willing to consider private organisations bidding to take over nine of the sites including the Chesterfield Remploy.
