Call up for Yorkshire's Joe Root

Yorkshire cricket's Joe Root has been called up to the England test squad for the first time. He is one of two uncapped batsmen - Somerset's Nick Compton is the other - to have won places. Root, who is 21, could fill the gap left by the retirement of Andrew Strauss.

Kevin Pietersen has been left out of the squad's tour of India - his omission opens the way for Compton, the 29-year-old grandson of Denis, who was the top English batsman in the county championship last season with an average of 99.
