Police investigation following death of badger

PA Wire

Police are appealing for information after a female badger was attacked in Milner Royd, Sowerby Bridge. They believe it was chased before being attacked and killed by dogs thought to belong to poachers. It was reported to police last Thursday (4, October).

This is the fourth incident in Calderdale this year and Calderdale district police’s Wildlife Officer, Special Constable Phil Sanderson, is urging people to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to police.

SC Sanderson said: "Badgers are a protected species by law, as is their habitation, and anyone found interfering with a badger set could face prosecution.

Last month, poachers attempted to remove heavy stone and rubble in the Scammonden area in an attempt to dig up a badger set. It is thought the poachers fled empty handed.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who has any information about suspected badger baiting in the area, is urged to contact Special Constable Phil Sanderson or PC Fiona Igo at Todmorden Police Station on 101. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111**.
