Sickness bug forces school closure

Dozens of pupils have fallen victim to a sickness bug which has forced education chiefs to close a school at Elland as health experts try to find the cause of the outbreak.

It's believed the pupils at Cross Lane Primary and Nursery School have been hit by shigella sonnei gastroenteritis, which brings on symptoms such as bloody diarrhoea, headache, fever, nausea and sometimes vomiting.

West Yorkshire Health Protection Unit is working with environmental health officers and NHS colleagues in Calderdale to investigate the outbreak. The school has been shut down today and tomorrow for a "deep clean".
