Scotland Yard is pursuing 340 lines of inquiry in the Jimmy Savile abuse case including 40 potential victims, the force said tonight.
So far 12 allegations of sexual offences have been officially recorded but this number is increasing, the force said.
Metropolitan Police detectives are in contact with 14 other forces as the number of allegations against the late television presenter continues to rise.
Police have confirmed 500 people have come forward as victims of Jimmy Savile.
The investigation into the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal has cost around £2 million so far according to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner.
Jimmy Savile thought he was "untouchable" and would regularly walk in on Broadmoor patients while they were in the bath, it's been claimed.
