Hundreds of walkers are expected to take part in this year's Boxing Day Pilgrimage from Ripon Cathedral to Fountains Abbey, a tradition begun in 1982 , following in the footsteps of a group of Cistercian Monks who first walked from Ripon to Fountains on December 26th, 1132, and founded the Abbey.
Before the pilgrims set off, a service of Holy Communion takes place at 9.30am at the Cathedral which this year will be led jointly by the Dean of Ripon, the Very Revd Keith Jukes and Bishop Packer.
The Pilgrimage sets out at 10.15am from Ripon Cathedral and goes through parkland following the banks of the River Skell, through the Studley Royal Deer Park and on tf Fountains Abbey. The one and a half hour walk concludes with a short service of carols and prayers in the Fountains Abbey ruins.
