77-year-old killed in motorway crash

A 77-year-old motorist has been killed in an accident on the M1 motorway near Rotherham.

The man, collapsed at the wheel, which caused him to put his foot down on the car's accelerator pedal.

The vehicle then collided with a side crash barrier.

His 72-year-old female passenger applied the handbrake, the vehicle skidded across the carriageway, hit the central barrier and overturned.

The driver, from Liversedge, West Yorkshire, was taken to Rotherham District General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

His passenger, also from Liversedge, was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

South Yorkshire Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the accident or saw the vehicle shortly before the crash took place.

They are urged to contact South Yorkshire Police on non-emergency number 101.
