The 44-tonne lorry was carrying a load of around 10 tonnes of frozen fish, much of which spilled onto the road.
The lorry itself is blocking the whole road and some of the frozen salmon has also spread over onto the opposite carriageway.
A full closure is currently in place at junction 34 eastbound of the M62 with diversions via the A19 and A645 or the A19, A63 and A1041 for high vehicles.
The closure is expected to remain in place for some time.
