Rail union ballots over strike action

Rail union RMT says it will begin balloting all its Northern Rail members over strike action in a dispute over the use of agency staff for core railway work.

RMT is demanding an immediate end to Northern Rail casualising the workforce. If there is work that needs doing, it should be done by permanently employed staff on decent pay and conditions and not by an exploited, short-term workforce paid a pittance and denied the most basic of workplace benefits. The ballot will open next week and will close on Monday 20th May 2013. RMT remains available for meaningful talks.”
