An elderly man who was killed after being knocked down by a runaway police van has been named as Donald Bennett. The 83-year-old retired joiner, was in Pudsey Park, when he was struck by the unattended van. Police were called to reports of a disturbance in the park shortly after 2pm on Saturday.
Two officers left the police van to deal with the incident when it rolled into the pensioner who was walking through the park. Mr Bennett, who was believed to be married, was visiting the park with family. He was treated by ambulance staff at the scene but was pronounced dead shortly after.
The matter has been referred to the Police Complaints Commission.
