Visitors to a Huddersfield park are being invited to name its latest addition. A meerkat sculpture now stands proudly in Beaumont Park. The artwork was prompted by the decay of an Ash tree which need to be removed.

Staff member John Mason came up with the idea of making the tree into a sculpture and suggested it should be made into a meerkat.

Kirklees Forestry tree surgeon Graham Walton was then contacted as he has worked on several such projects. He has now finished the sculpture and it has been treated to preserve the wood.

Visitors to the park are invited to come up with a name for the new addition and the winning entry will be carved into the sculpture itself.

Entries should be sent to Maryke Woods at Streetscene, Flint Street, Fartown, Huddersfield, HD1 6LG; or emailed to Maryke.woods@kirklees.gov.uk by the closing date is July 5.
