Former Great Britain rugby league international Stuart Fielden has announced his retirement from the game with immediate effect after struggling to overcome a knee problem.

The 33-year-old former Bradford and Wigan prop, who joined Huddersfield at the start of the season, will remain at the John Smith's Stadium as part of head coach Paul Anderson's backroom team.

Fielden, who is still the game's most expensive player following his move to Wigan from Bradford for a transfer fee of around #440,000 in 2006, appeared in nine of the Giants' opening 11 matches of Super League XVIII before picking up a knee injury at Castleford in April.

The knee then became infected and Fielden has decided to hang up his boots.
