The cost of keeping the peace

The South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner says it is outrageous taxpayers should have to pay for a demonstration in Sheffield on September 21. In the past year there have been 10 EDL rallies across the region, so far the bill has been around £2.5 million to keep the peace.

Row over EDL march in Sheffield

It is claimed that it could cost more than £750,000 to police an EDL rally in Sheffield. Around 1,200 officers are being drafted in. The South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner wants the government to foot the bill.
