Campaigners who are opposed to plans to close the accident and emergency department at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary are travelling to Manchester to stage a demonstration outside the Conservative Party Conference.

They are opposed to proposals which would see some services transferred to the Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax with Huddersfield's 400 bed unit downgraded to a 'planned care' facility with just 64 beds.

Protesters were planning to board trains this morning to cross the Pennines and stage a demonstration, urging the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt and the Independent Reconfiguration Panel to carry out an in-depth investigation of the plans which they should not simply be 'rubber stamped'.
