The Bark and Read scheme, started by Cruft's organisers, The Kennel Club, has shown that children find it easier to read out loud to a dog rather than an adult.

At Lutley Primary School in Halesowen, Muffin the dog is a regular visitor.

Kelvin Daley, assistant head teacher, says Muffin's presence has been extremely beneficial.

"A lot of children find reading to an adult quite tense, especially if they're not confident readers, so it can help them relax if they think they're reading to the dog."

Mr Daley says the school hopes to use Muffin to help throughout the school, inspiring children not only to read but to improve their writing too.
