An 80 miles per hour speed limit is to be tested on several sections of the motorways in the Midlands.
Some of the country's busiest routes will be trialled, including the M6, M42 and M1in the Midlands.
This will allow drivers to legally drive at the higher speed during quieter times.
The new speed limits could be in place as early as next year.
Transport Secretary Justine Greening will begin talks with motoring groups in the next few weeks.
The new speeds will apply to cars and vans on motorways, however the current 60mph restriction for lorries will stay.
