A sailor from Worcestershire, who was badly injured during a Round The World yacht race says he feared he wasn't going to survive the accident.

Mark Burkes, 47, from Shrawley in Worcestershire suffered a back injury in the incident.

He says he will stay on the boat until it reaches land in the next 24 hours.

The boat, the Geraldton Western Australia, is one of 10 UK-registered 68ft yachts competing in the Clipper Round The World Yacht Race, which takes place once every two years.

His relieved family heard from him via email last night to say that he was safe and the boat was limping into port in San Francisco.
