A memorial statue for a group of miners who worked at Birch Coppice Colliery in Tamworth has been unveiled today.

The 10-foot high structure features the names of more than a thousand miners who worked at the colliery and is topped off with a 6ft tall replica of the famous Davy lamp used by underground workers.

An appeal was launched last summer for the former workers and relatives of deceased miners to get in touch so their names could be engraved onto the bricks of the memorial.

The huge influx of names meant that the official opening had to be postponed until today to provide enough time for the extra engraving and construction to take place.
