Four weeks after they died, the bodies of Duwayne, Jade, John, Jack, Jesse and Jayden Philpott have been released by the coroner to the family for burial. The six children died after a fire at their home on Victory Road in the Allenton area of Derby on May 11. A post-mortem examination revealed they had died from smoke inhalation.
Last month, the children's parents Mick and Mairead Philpott were charged with their murders. both have since appeared in court and been remanded in custody.
It is thought the couple have applied for compassionate leave to attend the funerals. The prison service has not confirmed if an application has been made but has said in such an event, a risk assessment would have to be carried out, both as standard practice and also due to the sensitive nature of the case.
Prior to the arrests, it is thought the funerals were to be held at Derby Cathedral. Staff there say the offer still stands. It is also understood the family is looking at the possibility of holding the service at St Mary's Church, although nothing has been finalised.
Derbyshire Police have also said it could be up to another two weeks before the funerals are held.
