The funeral of the six Philpott children who died in a house fire in Derby will take place today.

The children - Jade Philpott (10), John (9), Jack (8), Jessie (6) and Jayden (5), died in the fire at their home in Victory Road, Allenton last month.

Their brother Duwayne (13) died three days later in hospital.

The funeral will take place at St Mary's Church in St Alkmund's Way in Derby.

Their parents Mick and Mairead Philpott are currently in custody charged with the murder of their children.

They will not be attending the funeral today.

"The day of the funeral will be a very sad day for the Philpott family, their friends, the local community and all those affected by this tragedy.

“The funeral will be an understandably difficult and emotional time and I would particularly ask that anyone attending and the media who cover the funeral respect the privacy of the family and mourners."

– Assistant Chief Constable Steve Cotterill

The police also advised motorists that it would be sensible to avoid the immediate area between 9.30am and 1pm tomorrow to avoid delays.

“Understandably, with the six horse drawn hearses the funeral cortege will take time to travel from the Allenton area through the city to the church and then later on to the cemetery at Chaddesden where the children are being laid to rest.”

– Assistant Chief Constable Steve Cotterill
