A report on the mounted section of Nottinghamshire police force will be presented to the full police authority today.

Nottinghamshire police could lose its mounted section, made up of seven horses and seven staff.

Although there will be no redundancies made, if the horses go they will be gone for good.

The force needs to cut more than £42 million from its budget over four years.

Closing the Mounted Section would initially save £93,000 and raise a further £20,000 from the sale of the horses.

The overall saving by 2015 would be around £300,000 - just 0.7 percent of the required total.

Nottinghamshire Police say they haven't taken this decision lightly, but say the Mounted Section plays only a limited role in force operations.
