A jury has retired to consider its verdict in the case of a Handsworth dentist charged with defrauding the NHS of £1.4 million. Dr. Joyce Trail, 50, is alleged to have over claimed between 2006 and 2009 for NHS work she had not, in fact, carried out. Her sister Fiona Trail, 46, and daughter Nyri Sterling, 33, are alleged to have conspired with her in the fraud while they worked at her Hamstead Road practise. The trial at Birmingham Crown Court has so far lasted five weeks.Joyce and Fiona Trail are also charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. The allegation is that they asked a witness in the fraud case to lose some of his paperwork, knowing it would form part of the case against them. All three women deny all the charges against them.
