Aston Villa have signed defender Ron Vlaar from Feyenoord. The Dutch international has agreed terms on a three year deal at Villa Park.

He is the club's fourth signing of the transfer window, and follows the departure of veteran centre back James Collins who has joined West Ham United.

27-year-old Vlaar told Aston Villa's official website that he is excited about the challenge ahead.

I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of players such as Paul McGrath, Olof Mellberg and Martin Laursen, of course - all of them great players for this club"

Vlaar continued: "Over time I hope my relationship with the fans at Villa becomes the same as it was at Feyenoord. I was at Feyenoord for seven years and the fans were good for me. It would be great to experience the same here and I will strive to achieve this."

Aston Villa's first match of 2012/13 Premier League season is away to West Ham on August 2.
