Protesters rally against Alexandra Hospital proposals

A rally and march is under way against proposals which protesters say could see the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch closed or lose services like A&E and maternity. Around 500 members of the ‘Save the Alex’ campaign are marching from the Town Hall.

Worcestershire NHS Trust has published six options to save £50 million and reduce its estimated £200 million deficit, which could involve reducing services at several sites in the county.

Campaigners argue that Redditch has a growing elderly population and a large youth population, with high levels of deprivation and youth unemployment. They say there should be more investment in local services, more care at home and in the community as well as A&E facilities at the Alexandra Hospital.

“We want as many people as possible to know about the review of health services in Worcestershire. And it is only right that people should express their views. We are focused on preparing for a full consultation with the people of Worcestershire which we aim to begin in November and will run for three months. All views expressed so far, including by campaigners, correspondence and at our seven public meetings will be taken in to account before any final decisions are made.”
