A man has died following a fire in Willenhall, many people were rescued from their homes and dozens evacuated.

The emergency services arrived at the scene at 2:15am to find maisonettes on fire, it is thought the blaze spread from a wheelie bin opposite the building.

A man who is yet to be identified, was found collapsed inside the building and pronounced dead at the scene.

Twenty minutes later another fire was reported in the area which also appeared to have been started in a bin, no one was injured but several people had to be rescued.

Police investigating the series of fires later arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of committing arson with intent to endanger life.

“We have launched a full investigation into the series of events this morning, which resulted in the death of a man in one of the fires.

“At this early stage he is yet to be identified and we are in the process of locating his family.

“A number of scenes are currently cordoned off whilst we carry out forensic searches of the area.

“We now appeal for people in the community, or anyone who might know anything, to come forward with information to help our inquiry.”
