Nine thousand passengers were jetting off from East Midlands Airport today as the big Christmas holiday getaway got into full swing. Over the festive period, more than 86,000 travellers are expected to pass through the airport.
Most of those taking flight are heading for the Mediterranean hotspots for some winter sunshine. The top three destinations this year are Tenerife, Lanzarote and Alicante.
Glenn Pearson and his family, from Hucknall in Nottinghamshire, flew out to the Canary Islands this morning. He's gone abroad for the festive season for the last 18 years and was looking forward to spending Christmas Day with a beer by the pool. "I've got to get away from some of this rain and cold", he told ITV Central.
However, some holidaymakers were looking forward to somewhere colder. A number of Polish families living in the Midlands were heading back to their home country to spend Christmas with relatives. Temperatures in Poland are currently as low as -10 degrees.
Maciej and Dominika Gruca and their young son, who were boarding a flight to Rzeszow, said, "It's going to be fantastic. There's snow so it's going to be a white Christmas."
