Phase Two of the High Speed Rail (HS2) project gained momentum today as contracts were announced for engineering and environmental services on the line.

The proposed HS2 line is a Y shape, providing links initially from London to Birmingham, and then onwards towards Leeds and Manchester. The first phase is due to open in 2026, the second between 2032 and 2033.

The government says the line will promote economic growth and create thousands of jobs, both during construction and as cities are brought closer together.

There is much opposition to the route from communities through which the track will pass.

The contracts were awarded following procurement rules.
