A mother and her boyfriend have gone on trial accused of murdering her two-year-old son in Birmingham.
Opening the trial at Birmingham Crown Court, the prosecutor Christopher Hotten QC told the jury that Keanu Williams was "beaten to death". He said the two-year-old's death was the culmination of months of ill-treatment and assault. Rebecca Shuttleworth and Luke Southerton, the court heard, were "in it together."
The jury was told that Keanu Williams had 37 marks of external injuries on his body and internally had a "fist-sized" tear near his stomach. He also had injuries consistent with being hit by an object - a rod or stick.
The court was told that Keanu Williams was already dead when paramedics were called to the home in Ward End, Birmingham on 9th January 2011.
Rebecca Shuttleworth and Luke Southerton are charged with murder, causing or allowing the death of a child and child cruelty.
The pair deny all the charges. The trial continues.
