Wintry weather

Welcome to the first day of Spring. Yes – really! It may feel like mid-winter but the Spring Equinox is upon us and this year with that comes rain, sleet, snow, strong winds and icy cold temperatures.

Today will remain cloudy with a few showers here and there and a mixture of rain and sleet mostly across the East Midlands. Temperatures will only reach 5c quite depressing when I tell you this time last year it was around 15c. The easterly wind is the culprit making it feel very cold.

Tonight will be cloudy with some breaks and most of the showers will ease giving us a dry night. It will be cold though with temperatures below freezing.

So a chilly start to Thursday but with some sunshine first thing however that won't last for long. A band of rain is heading our way from the south-west and the cloud will build ahead of it. The south west corner of the West Midlands will see a few spots of rain before the sun goes down. Elsewhere will be dry but cloudy and cold again just like today.

The rain will sweep through tomorrow night heading north and eastwards and the wind will increase too. When the rain hits colder air it could turn to snow. This is most likely across the Peak District where we are expecting some nasty conditions.

That sets the scene for Friday which will be wet and windy with more snow possible higher ground.

Saturday is a similar story, cloudy, wet, windy and cold.

Sunday looks drier but much colder, highs of just 2c!
